Seven Layer Squares

Seven Layer Squares are really sweet, almost more of a candy than a cookie.  A condy or a caakie.  Okay I’ll stop. Just ’cause they’re sweet doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make them because they are one of the richest and sublimely sweet and textury (new word I just coined) caakies ever . . .

1. Layer One: melt 1 stick of butter in an 11 x 7 glass pan. I just put a stick of butter in the glass pan and turned on the oven to preheat to 325 degrees.  Next step:  graham cracker crumbs.

2. Layer Two: add 1 cup graham cracker crumbs.  If you have the graham crackers, just seal in a zip lock type bag and press with a rolling pin until crushed. About 12 squares make 1 cup crumbs. Then sprinkle on evenly over the melted butter.  Press down with a spatula.

3. Layer Three: spread 1 cup of chocolate chips.

4. Layer Four: sprinkle on 1 cup coconut.

5. Layer Five: add one cup of butterscotch chips.

6. Layer Six:  pour one can of sweetened condensed milk over the top.  I save a little and pour the rest over the nut layer — coming up next.

7. Layer Seven: you can add a cup of walnuts or pecans. Drizzle remaining sweetened condensed milk over top.  Add anything else that you like. Add another layer or two . . .but I’m done.

Bake at 325 for 25 – 30 minutes.  Then cool and cut into bars. I pressed down lightly with a spatula to even out the top and compress the mixture.
